Now let’s talk about Vision Pro.
I took a 10-hour flight to Greece because of a presentation. This was a red-eye flight, non-business class (who would have thought flying from new york to greece would cost $350!?) with no kids and it felt like a great opportunity to try out my Vision Pro on board.
What was great….
𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝘆 Despite how awkward this felt, it was a unique, immersive experience that turned my seat into a mini-office that allowed me to work on my deck. The weight distribution made it surprisingly comfortable (the battery is not on the headset itself which makes it lighter) = great for productivity use cases
𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 Entertainment provided a form of 'escape' and made me feel like I was in a personal theater. I adjusted the screen according to my head position/angle and it was comfortable - nothing like the standard cramped feel. Using my airpods helped with noise cancelation = great seamless ecosystem integration.
𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲 It has a Travel mode that adapts the device to the motion and environment of commercial air travel = great for overall experience
What could be improved….
𝗔𝘄𝗸𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘁 I felt like an exhibit throughout the flight. Someone thought Emirates handed out Vision Pros as part of entertainment and people assumed I couldn't see them through the headset which made things more awkward as I could see the stares.
𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀 This was the biggest issue, I had to recalibrate a couple of times.
𝗘𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 Attempting to eat with it on was very disorienting, it underscored the device's influence on spatial awareness, but perhaps I shouldn't have tried that.
𝗡𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗳𝗹𝗶𝘅 The lack of support for offline content from i.e. Netflix was a big drawback. Apple's integration of MR experiences into everyday scenarios like long-haul flights demonstrates how such devices can enhance our experiences in constrained environments like airplane cabins. It's definitely an investment, and reading a book or typing felt easier the old-school way... But for mixing work and fun and making a flight go faster, it was great. I can imagine a future where airlines will have headsets on every seat, great opportunity for experiences around mindfullness, new ways of being productive during a flight and lower in-flight stress levels.
