Skills to Unlearn in order to succeed in AI
Everyone (including myself!) is talking about what you need to learn about AI. I learned this the hard way - it's not just about learning new things, what's just as important is to think about what old habits, processes, workflows, perceptions or ideas will likely hold you back.
Depending on your role, here's what I'd forget:
✨ If you are a Product Manager:
Forget Static Product Roadmaps and very precisely defined milestones: With AI's dynamic nature, clinging to a fixed roadmap might limit innovation. Prioritize a high-level vision that is flexible, as AI's potential to revolutionize aspects of your product can change your direction overnight. Be ready to pivot (and get comfortable with it).
✨ If you are a Data Scientist (I used to be one!):
Forget Rigidity: Data science was once a field of structured datasets and well-defined problems. With AI, the game has changed. Embrace adaptability, as AI often requires exploring uncharted territories, working with messy data, and redefining problems on the go.
✨ If you are a Program Manager:
Forget "This is How We've Always Done It": With AI rewriting the rules, methods that worked in the past might be obsolete today. Stay agile, re-evaluate processes regularly, and be open to drastic changes to ensure AI integration's success.
✨ If you are an Engineer:
Forget Monolithic Approaches: AI demands more modular and adaptable software practices, often involving distributed systems and microservices.
✨ If you are an Academic:
Forget Solely Theory-Driven Approaches: While foundational theories are vital, AI is a field where practical application and experimentation drive breakthroughs. Encourage students to get their hands dirty with real-world projects and embrace iterative learning.
✨ If you are a Founder:
Forget Short-Term Wins: Implementing AI can be a long journey filled with failures before success. It's not about immediate gratification but building a sustainable advantage. Adopt a mindset of patience and continuous learning.
✨ If you are a VC:
Forget Traditional Metrics of Success: AI startups might not fit the traditional mold of early profitability or rapid scale. Instead, focus on their potential to disrupt, the quality of their data, and their long-term vision. Trust in the transformative power of AI rather than immediate returns.
